Brett Favre: GO AWAY

I utilize a neutral picture of Brett Favre instead of one in his Packer #4 because I don't know who Brett Favre is anymore. I'm not sure Brett Favre knows who Brett Favre is anymore. This 15 month saga dripping in melodrama has really, really gotten old for me. Ever since he started flirting with Eric Mangini's New York Jets last spring, I've lost a ton of respect for one of the greatest quarterbacks to play the game.
Can we all agree that this country boy from Mississippi absolutely craves the limelight and loves to be dramatic? Everyone loves Favre for his everyman appeal and down-to-earth personality, but I am not fooled. You're telling me that Favre has made millions on top of millions of dollars and is as humble, grounded, easy going as the guy you see in the Wrangler jeans commercials? I'm not buying it, money and fame change people. Favre is indecisive, short-sighted, and self-centered in all these fake retirements: Why else would he hold the Packers (then the Jets) hostage for most of 2008, then toy with Brad Childress and the Vikings now this year? He quits, then realizes he wants to play, and at the most inconvenient time of the NFL offseason, he picks a team he wants to play for and proceeds to hold up all the roster additions and team chemistry that was made during the offseason.
The amount of media coverage devoted to Favre (I'm looking at you ESPN [especially], SI, and Yahoo) is egregious. Is it really necessary to assign 2 reporters to follow Brett's every move and shoot footage of him mowing his lawn at home? I'm guessing the NFL loves all the free pub that #4 brings, but that doesn't make it any less annoying for us consumers.
At first it was compelling, now its just infuriating. Spare me the histrionics Favre, I'm sick of it. You showed you've got some left in the tank in 2008; clearly you can play. If you want to play, then play. If your heart isn't into it, I ask that you'd quietly retire to your home in the South and resist the drama and spotlight. Its alright, this happens to every pro athlete, and none has died from retirement yet by my count.

His career as a whole is impressive, but his performance last season, particularly down the stretch, isn't anything to write home about. This would be a non-story if another quarterback of the same current ability was wavering on the edge of retirement or comeback. But instead, because it is Brett Favre, we get to hear about it non stop.
Does ESPN not realize that a majority of people don't care and just want to hear real news? NOBODY CARES ABOUT BRETT FAVRE ANYMORE!
