My Celtics v Mavs
March 22nd 2008 12:34
I sat down on the couch, ready to finally see a good Boston Celtics match live on my TV set in Australia. Every other time I've seen them they've to blow the team out of the water.
Coming off huge wins against reigning champs San Antonio and then 22 game win streakers Houston, sitting on top of the NBA standings, I was unsure whether they'd be in top form for this one.
First quarter- Things are running smoothly when Boson takes a 22-17 lead and I'm in awe of the fluidity of Boston's offense.
Second quarter- Boston's second unit outplays Dallas' while the starters rest. It's fair to say there's two major things that no one was expecting about the Celtics this season. One- no one expected them to play such amazing, league-leading defense, and Two- no one expected their bench and role players to be among the best in the league.
Third Quarter- Boston's sticking around but they definitely aren't playing as well as Dallas at this point. Dampier is getting the seal on his player and Kidd's finding him. Howard's having a decent game, Stackhouse too. Meanwhile for the Celtics Allen's rusty and Rondo's atrocious.
Fourth Quarter- Pierce comes out hard, drawing fouls and getting the C's in the penalty. Kidd can't shoot over a jam tin. The Celtics step up the D and get some big steals but the Mavs get back the lead near the end. Ray Allen who's been left off for the first 10 minutes of the last quarter comes off a screen and bang, nails the clutch three and gets the C's the win.
Notes-
KG was disappointing offensively, his jumpshooting misfires almost killed the C's in the last quarter and his overall performance wasn't overwhelming.
Rondo was absolutely atrocious 0 for 7 and five turnovers, lucky for the pickup of Sam I Am A Baby Fetus Cassell who doesn't shoot well but steadies the ship, playing the whole last quarter.
Kidd can't shoot. I love his defensive smarts and his passing abilities but he can't shoot and he doesn't seem well suited to the Mavs. He makes his teammates better but really at this point it's only Dampier, Dirk's an isolation guy anyway.
I love Leon Powe for the Celtics, I can't believe they uncovered such a gem. Posey was great in this game too, he is the ultimate role player.
After watching the Celtics, clearly not at their best but still able to come through in the crunch against a top team on the road well I have to say I'm ready to put my money on them for the championship. I was a bit doubtful earlier after some struggles in close games and losses against quality opposition I wondered whether their league-leading regular season record wasn't a smokescreen. Now with the addition of Cassell to come through when Rondo isn't on, and the improved confident play down the stretch I can't see anyone beating these guys over a seven game series.
