England has to win
December 15th 2006 01:37
England must win the 3rd Test match in Perth for the much hyped ashes series to maintain any interest heading into Boxing Day. The series to date has been a disappointment, failing to match the incredible 2005 spectacle. England have played too conservatively, highlighted by the negative selections of a stubborn, embattled coach in Duncan Fletcher.
The decision not to play Monty Panesar in the opening two tests, has probably cost England any chance of retaining the Ashes. Forget Ashley Giles dropping Ricky Ponting, Panesar not bowling on the last day on a spinning Adelaide wicket cost England the match.
Fletcher has to take the blame. England’s woeful showing in the much hyped Ashes series has revealed the true identity of Fletcher. He is more of a dictator, rather than the preferred inclusive coaching style that is prevalent amongst International Cricket coaches. Fletcher is unbelievably stubborn and with his role as senior selector for overseas tours, does things the way he wants.
England must win the current test. The series has generated enormous interest and record crowds, in a country starved of any competitive contests. Australian summers in recent years have been too one-sided. The last competitive series in Australia was in 1997/98, when Australia beat South Africa 1-0, in a 3 Test series. England has to lift. Otherwise it's going to be another boring summer, with Australia winning 5-0, and another series failing to live up to the hype.
